The byproducts of water and wastewater treatment don't just disappear, they have to go somewhere. That's where nutrient management, and IES' certified nutrient management planner, comes in. Often these byproducts are able to be used in a positive way that is within environmental regulations and local restrictions. These nutrients include, but are not limited to, bio solids, municipal solids, poultry litter, dairy slurry, and feedlot manure waste.
IES works with municipalities and farmers, looking at what is going to be grown, what nutrients are needed for that growth, the natural productivity of the soil, the residuals from previous crops grown, and the quantity of nutrients available to apply. Using this information, IES can come up with a plan that matches the nutrient needs, and supplements it, to provide maximum crop output and minimize environmental impact. Nutrient management isn't just for crops, however! It is also effective on fields that have grass or hay.
